From Middle English, from Old English betweoxn (between), for earlier *betweoxum, *betwihsum, *betwiscum, from be- + dative plural of *twix, *twisc (twofold), from twā (two) + -isc (-ish), equivalent to be- +‎ two +‎ -ish.
