From old plural blawd (flowers) +‎ -yn, from Middle Welsh blawt, from Proto-Celtic *blātus (compare Cornish bleujen, Breton bleuñv, Irish bláth), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰleh₃- (blossom, flower).
