Etymology[edit]
From Middle Irish brechtán (“bread with butter spread on it”) (obsolete Irish breachtán),[1] from brecht (“variegated, multicolored”), from Old Irish mrecht,[2] from Proto-Celtic *mrixtos (“painted, speckled”).
