Proto-Germanic *bruþą "broth" from Proto-Germanic *brewwaną "to brew" from Proto-Indo-European *bherw-, *bhrew- "to boil, seethe". Akin to Old English brēowan "to brew", Old English brēad "crumb, bread". See brēowan, brēad.
