From Proto-Bodo-Garo *Brɯi¹ (“four”), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *b-ləj (“four”). Cognate with Tibetan བཞི (bzhi), Burmese လေး (le:), Garo bri, Atong (India) byryi.
