Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Greater Central Philippine *buhay (live (long)) (cf. Masbatenyo buhay, Hanunoo buhay, Bikol Central buhay, and Buhi'non Bikol, Libon Bikol, Miraya Bikol buway), possibly related to Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *bihaʀ (compare Sambali biyay, Kapampangan bie, and Ivatan vyay). Possible doublet of bihag. Compare also Cebuano buhi, Hiligaynon buhi, Agusan Manobo buhi, Ata Manobo bui, and Tausug buhi' which came from Proto-Southern Philippine *buhiʔ (live).
