From Anglo-Norman/Old Northern French chaucee, caucie et al., from Late Latin calceāta or *calciāta, either from calceāre/calciāre (“stamp on, tread”), from Latin calx (“heel”), or from a derivative of calx (“limestone”). Compare French chaussée, English causeway.
