From Proto-Vietic *coːŋ. Cognate with Arem ⁿcʊŋ ("thorn"), Kha Phong coːŋ¹.

The vowel correspondence with Arem, while unusual, is also seen in Vietnamese trốc vs. Arem ulʊk ("head").
