Noun[edit]
- ten
- một chục người ― ten men, one ten of men
- hai chục người ― twenty men, two tens of men
- phần chục ― the first decimal place
Usage notes[edit]
- Một chục is usually used as a synonym of mười (for example, một chục người is synonymous with mười người). However, một in một chục is sometimes dropped in colloquial speech.
- Unlike mười, which is a true numeral, chục is a noun. As a noun, chục cannot be followed by numerals. *chục một/hai/etc. are ungrammatical. For a parallel, compare English crore, which is a noun used to denote a number and can not be directly followed by another numeral.
- Used instead of mười if preceded by hàng (in all senses). *Hàng mười is not natively accepted.
- chục trứng (“ten eggs”) may be used as a unit when concerning purchases of eggs.
