Etymology[edit]

From late Proto-Germanic *kirikǭ (whence also Old Dutch and Old Saxon kirika, Old English ċiriċe), from Byzantine Greek κυριακόν (kuriakón) (δόμα) (kuriakon (doma)) ‘Lord's (house)’, from Ancient Greek κύριος (kúrios, lord).
