civil parish (plural civil parishes)

  1. (England) An administrative subdivision of a borough or local government district, which is the lowest tier of local government, mainly, but not exclusively, in rural areas.

Usage notes[edit]

Civil parishes in Wales were replaced by communities, and those in Scotland by community council areas.
