Swedish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Old Swedish dø̄ma, from Old Norse dǿma, from Proto-Germanic *dōmijaną.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (file)

Verb[edit]

döma (present dömer, preterite dömde, supine dömt, imperative döm)

  1. to sentence, to judge
  2. to deem, to make a judgement
  3. (sports) to umpire, to referee
  4. (idiomatic, in "döm om min förvåning (när ...)") imagine my surprise (when ...)

Usage notes[edit]

  • The spelling of this verb is irregular. Phonetically it should be *dömma, but the -m- is never doubled. The same is true of the related noun dom and derivatives.
