Etymology[edit]

Unknown. Possibly from Vulgar Latin root *derapināre / *deripināre, or from Latin deruncināre, the present active infinitive of deruncinō (to plane off, level, shave), probably via an intermediate form *deru(n)quināre, as qup is a common sound shift.[1]
