Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. Possibly from Latin root *derapinare/deripinare, or from deruncināre, the present active infinitive of deruncinō (to plane off, level, shave), probably via an intermediate form *deru(n)quinare, as qup is a common sound shift.[1]
