From Proto-Albanian *dalnānja, deadjectival of *dalna, from Proto-Indo-European *dolh₁- ‘to cut’ (compare Latvian dalīt ‘to divide’, Latin dolāre ‘to hew’, Old Norse telgja ‘to carve’).
