Singular
decimal point

Plural
decimal points

decimal point (plural decimal points)

  1. (arithmetic) A symbol ( . ) used to separate the fractional part of a decimal from the whole part.
  2. (proscribed) A decimal place.

[edit] Usage notes

  • (proscribed, a decimal place): The use of decimal point to mean "a digit in the fractional part of a decimal" is incorrect. Decimal numbers can have any number of decimal places, but have only one decimal point.

[edit] Translations

Note: In some countries, especially those in continental Europe, the symbol used is a comma, and so the word used in the languages spoken in these countries is often the same as or derived from the word for comma.
