Etymology[edit]

From Vulgar Latin root *discaballicare, from caballicare, from caballus (horse), or from des- + (în)căleca. Compare Spanish descabalgar, compare also Albanian shkalkoj. The second sense of settling and populating may have been influenced by a migratory or nomadic Central Asian people that entered lands occupied by Romanians, as a similar meaning of choosing a place to set up and live temporarily exists in some Turanian cultures for the term 'dismount'.
