Etymology[edit]
diagonaalinen + hiihto, coined to differentiate the classic style of cross-country skiing in which the hands and legs are working diagonally and the skis are moved along parallel tracks from the newer discipline of luisteluhiihto (“ski skating, skate skiing”).
