Etymology[edit]

From earlier *ndjerr, Proto-Albanian *ən-tersa, from Proto-Indo-European *ters- 'to dry (up)'. Cognate to Latin torreo (to dry), Gothic 𐌸𐌰𐌿𐍂𐍃𐌿𐍃 (þaursus), Old High German durri arid, dry. Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *derna, from Proto-Indo-European *der. Compare Ancient Greek δέρω (dérō, to skin), Sanskrit दृणाति (dṛṇāti, to busrt, to tear) and Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐍄𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌰𐌽 (gatairan, to tear)[1].
