Etymology[edit]
Renamed from Fort-Lamy on April 6, 1973 by President François Tombalbaye, after the Arabic name of a nearby village, نِجَامِينَا (nijāmīnā), meaning “place of rest”, as part of his authenticité program of Africanization.
