Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Either from the partitive singular of (dialectal) enä, or alternatively from enä +‎ -ki(n), through reduction (*enä-ɣi(k) > enäi > enää); the clitic -kin (from earlier *-ɣik) may have developed a comparative sense.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈenæː/, [ˈe̞næː]
  • Rhymes: -enæː
  • Syllabification(key): e‧nää

Adverb[edit]

enää

  1. (chiefly in the negative) any more, any longer
    Kylässä ei ole enää hotellia.
There is no hotel in the village any more.
  2. (now/nowadays ...) only, merely, just, solely (when there used to be more)
    Saan enää vain harvoin kirjeitä.
Nowadays I get letters only rarely.
    Tarvitaan enää pientä hiomista.
Now it just needs some finishing work.
