Albanian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Origin disputed. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *er- 'earth'. Compare Ancient Greek ἔρᾱ (érā, earth), Old High German ero, Armenian erkir (erkir), Gothic aírÞa (aírÞa) 'earth'. For sense development compare Armenian erkir (erkir) 'earth' after erkin (erkin) 'sky, heaven'. Alternatively from Latin aere 'air', although this is uncertain as this word is already reflected in Albanian ajër.
