From Proto-Albanian *aiska, from Proto-Indo-European *aisk- (bright, shining). Cognate to Lithuanian áiškus (clear, bright), Old Norse eiskra (rage before hot excitement), Old Church Slavonic искра (iskra, spark).

Conservative variant of esh, from Proto-Albanian *etska, with devoicing from *edz-k-a, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁eǵʰis; cognate with Ancient Greek ἐχῖνος (ekhînos), Macedonian еж (), German Igel, Lithuanian ežỹs.[1]
