From Old High German ezzan, from Proto-Germanic *etanan. Cognate with Old Saxon etan, Danish æde, English eat, Gothic 𐌹𐍄𐌰𐌽 (itan) and Dutch eten. Non-Germanic cognates include Latin edō, Russian есть.
