From English standard, from Middle English, from the Old French estandart (gathering place, battle flag), from Old Frankish *standhard (literally stand firm, stand hard), equivalent to stand +‎ -ard. Alternative etymology derives the second element from Old Frankish *ord (point, spot, place).
