- Contraction of että ei (“that not”) (third-person singular or impersonal form).
- Ikävää, ettei hän päässyt tulemaan. [= Ikävää, että hän ei päässyt tulemaan.]
- It's a pity that he could not come.
- Toivotaan, ettei huomenna sada. [= Toivotaan, että huomenna ei sada.]
- Let's hope that it does not rain tomorrow.
