From Middle High German vliezen, from Old High German vliozan, from Proto-West Germanic *fleutan, from Proto-Germanic *fleutaną, akin to English fleet (verb), Old Saxon fliotan and Dutch vlieten.

Conjugation[edit]

Before 1996, the conjugated forms floss and flosst were spelled floß and floßt respectively. Since the 1996 German Spelling Reform, though, they are spelled with ss.
