Etymology[edit]

From Middle English forgniden, from Old English forgnīdan (to grind together, dash down, crush, break), from Proto-Germanic *fargnīdaną (to rub, grind, crush, crumble), equivalent to for- +‎ gnide. Cognate with Old High German firgnītan (to crush, destroy).
