Esperanto [edit]
Etymology [edit]
Back-formation from fraŭlino (“Miss”) (subtracting suffix -ino (“female”)), from German Fräulein.
Pronunciation [edit]
- IPA: /ˈfɾawlo/
Noun [edit]
fraŭlo (plural fraŭloj, accusative singular fraŭlon, accusative plural fraŭlojn)
- bachelor (unmarried man)
- Li estas tipa fraŭlo kun multaj koramikinoj.
- He is a typical bachelor with several girlfriends.
- (uncommon, often capitalized) title for an unmarried male, coordinate to Miss (honorific)
Usage notes [edit]
Unlike Sinjoro (Mister), Sinjorino (Madam, Mistress) and Fraŭlino (Miss), Fraŭlo is not commonly used as courtesy title. Not quite equivalent to English "Master", as that is age-based rather than marriage-based.
