Esperanto[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Back-formation from fraŭlino (Miss) (subtracting suffix -ino (female)), from German Fräulein.

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

fraŭlo (plural fraŭloj, accusative singular fraŭlon, accusative plural fraŭlojn)

  1. bachelor (unmarried man)
    • 1932, L. L. Zamenhof (tr.), “Nokta ĉapo de fraŭlo”, in Fabeloj (in Esperanto), translation of Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen:
      Oni mokas maljunan fraŭlon.
      People mock an old bachelor.
  2. (uncommon, often capitalized) title for an unmarried male, coordinate to Miss (honorific)

Usage notes[edit]

Unlike Sinjoro (Mister), Sinjorino (Madam, Mistress) and Fraŭlino (Miss), Fraŭlo is not commonly used as courtesy title. Not quite equivalent to English "Master", as that is age-based rather than marriage-based.
