From Middle Dutch ghewaghen, from earlier unattested *ghewaen, from Old Dutch *giwān, from Proto-Germanic *gawahwaną, from Proto-Indo-European *wekʷ- (to speak). The verb was still a class 6 strong verb in Middle Dutch, with the past tense ghewoech.
