Etymology[edit]

Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese (time, season; hour, SV: thì, thời). Doublet of thời and thì. Compare also Central Vietnamese chừ. See also Chinese (shí), Japanese (ji) and Korean (si) which have similar dual functions for both time and duration.
