Etymology[edit]

From the same stem as grūts (heavy, difficult) (q.v.): *grūt-sna-s > *grūsnas > grūsns. The original meaning was probably “heavy,” from which “pregnant” (cf. Latin gravidus (heavy; pregnant)).[1]
