Ultimately from Germanic (Frankish) *wardon (possibly through a Late Latin *guardāre), whence also French garder, Spanish guardar, Catalan guardar, Occitan gardar, Sicilian guardari, vardari, Romansh guardar, vurdar, Friulian vuardâ, Venetian vardar. The Germanic root is found in English ward and German Wart.
