Finnish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

hapan (sour) +‎ hai (shark)

Noun[edit]

hapanhai

  1. A foul-smelling Icelandic food made of Greenland shark or basking shark by fermenting and drying. As it is barely known outside Nordic countries, most languages do not have a word for it. In English it might be called fermented shark, or by the Icelandic term kæstur hákarl (fermented shark) or just hákarl (shark, Greenland shark).
