Univerbation of haut (today) +‎ des (archaic genitive article) +‎ Dag (day) +‎ -s (archaic genitive suffix), thus literally “today of the day”. Compare German heutzutage, Dutch vandaag de dag, English nowadays, French au jour d’aujourd’hui.
