From Proto-Germanic *hīwiską, *hīwiskiją (household, family), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱei- (to lie with, store, be familiar). Cognate with Old Frisian hīskithe (household unit, household), Old High German hīwiski (household, family), Old Norse hýski (domestic unit, household).
