From Old Norse hjarta, from Proto-Germanic *hertô. Compare to English heart, German Herz, Icelandic, Faroese and Norwegian Nynorsk hjarta and Danish and Norwegian Bokmål hjerte. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱḗr (heart).
