From Proto-Germanic *hlahjaną, which might have come from an unattested Proto-Indo-European *klak-, *klek-. Cognates include Old Frisian hlaka, hlakkia, Old Saxon hlahhian, Old High German hlahhan, lahhen, Old Norse hlæja and Gothic 𐌷𐌻𐌰𐌷𐌾𐌰𐌽 (hlahjan).
