From Middle English, from Old English hopa (“hope, expectation”), from Proto-Germanic *hupōn (“hope”), from Proto-Indo-European *kēwp-, *kwēp- (“to smoke, boil”). Cognate with West Frisian hope (“hope”), Dutch hoop (“hope”), Middle High German hoffe (“hope”), Swedish hopp (“hope”).
