From Proto-Germanic *hrapjaną (to touch, scratch), from Proto-Indo-European *ker-, *sker- (to twist, bend). Cognate with Old Frisian hreppa (to move), Old Norse hreppa (to grasp, obtain). Related to Old English hrēpan (to touch).
