From Brito-Latin hybrid *sūdiculu- (compare Cornish hudhygel, Welsh huddygl), from Proto-Celtic *sūdiā (compare Old Irish suide), from *suh₃d-, metathesis of Proto-Indo-European *sh₃ud- (compare English soot).[1]
