Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Germanic *hwehwlą, from a Proto-Indo-European *kʷekʷlóm, *kʷékʷlos (compare Ancient Greek κύκλος (kúklos, cycle, wheel)), from *kʷel- (going around). Compare the Old Frisian hwēl, Old Saxon hwiol, Old Norse hvél, hjól, whence Danish hjul.
