- An epidermal layer of cells that secretes an overlying chitinous cuticle, as in arthropods.
- (botany) A layer of cells lying immediately below the epidermis.
- (anatomy) A subcutaneous layer of loose connective tissue containing fat cells, lying beneath the dermis.
