Welsh[edit]

Etymology[edit]

By dissimilation from the expected but unpronounceable forms *i'i and *i'u.

Pronunciation[edit]

Contraction[edit]

i’w (triggers soft mutation in the masculine singular, aspirate mutation in the feminine singular and h-prothesis in the plural)

  1. Contraction of i ei (to/for his, to/for her).
  2. Contraction of i eu (to/for their).

Usage notes[edit]

  • This contraction is obligatory; *i ei and *i eu never appear uncontracted.
