From Proto-Tai *qraj (egg). Cognate with Thai ไข่ (kài), Northern Thai ᨡᩱ᩵ (khai), Lao ໄຂ່ (khai), ᦺᦃᧈ (ẋay¹), Shan ၶႆႇ (khài), Ahom 𑜁𑜩 (khay), Zhuang gyaeq. Compare Sui geis (egg) and Southern Kam geiv (egg).
