Inherited from Proto-Slavic *ězditi.

Pronunciation[edit]

Verb[edit]

jezdit impf

Usage notes[edit]

jezdit is in the class of Czech abstract verbs. Its counterpart, jet, is a concrete verb.

  • For the means of transport, Czech uses the preposition na (on) and the locative case, or the instrumental case without a preposition.
jezdit na koleto ride a bike
    jezdit vlakemto go by train
jezdit autemto go by car (but: řídit auto)
  • While the word jet refers to a single journey, jezdit implies a habitual or a general action.
Pojedeš tam autem nebo autobusem? Will you go there by car or by bus?
Do práce jezdil tramvají.He used to go to work by tram.
