A back-formation from Proto-Slavic *kolesa (wheels) (compare Upper Sorbian and Czech koleso, Russian колесо́ (kolesó)), plural of *kolo, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷékʷlos, from *kʷel- (to turn).

The sense bicycle is a semantic loan from German Rad (wheel; bicycle).
