Etymology[edit]

From Ottoman Turkish قانامق (qanamaq, to bleed), from Proto-Turkic *kiān-a- (to bleed), from *kiān (blood). Cognate with Old Uyghur qʾnʾmʾq (qanamaq, to bleed), Karakhanid قَناماقْ (qanāmāq, to bleed), Turkmen gānamak (to bleed) and Mongolian ханах (xanax, to bleed); a Turkic borrowing.
