From a Proto-Tocharian *kenwäi, from a root *kenw-, *ken-, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵónu. Compare Tocharian B kenī(ne). Other cognates include Latin genū, Ancient Greek γόνυ (gónu), Old English cnēo (English knee).
