Etymology[edit]
Coined by the Icelandic author Halldór Laxness from the epic novel Sjálfstætt fólk ("Independent People") when describing weather conditions. From kas- from kös ("a heap") + mekktur ("with a mane"), from the noun makki ("mane").[1]
