From Old Turkic kaz, from Proto-Turkic *kāz, *kāŕ (goose), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *kāŕ/*kuĺ (goose, bird). Possibilities also include Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰans-, probably Nostratic or coincidental or a cultural Wanderwort.[1] Compare Turkmen gaz, Crimean Tatar qaz. See also Persian غاز (ğâz)[2]. Related to kuş.
